Perris
Dam, a key component of California’s State Water Project, is a zoned earthf
ill embankment dam measuring 2.2 miles in length and 126 ft. in height. It
was built in the early 1970’s near Perris, California. California’s Divisio
n of Safety of Dams is requiring remediation of the dam’s potentially lique
fiable foundation before operating restrictions are removed, and the reserv
oir can be filled back to its original design level. The owner, the Califor
nia Department of Water Resources, is in the construction phase of a multi-
component remediation design that includes Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM),
a new toe drain, extension of the drainage blanket, and a new downstream st
ability berm on the left half of the embankment. This presentation will dis
cuss the CDSM design, determination of design parameters made during the Fi
eld Validation Test Sections (two test walls and one test cell), inspection
observation methodology, and some insight into observations of soil ventin
g. This presentation was originally given at the AEG 2016 Annual Meeting an
d has been updated.Click here to register
