Speaker: Isaac Pope
At the cro ssroads of physics, chemistry, and other fields, geoscience is an intriguin g combination of subjects intertwined together by a curiosity for understan ding Earth. As human populations grow, geoscience has been called upon time and time again to address a variety of questions on engineering, hazards, and natural disasters. Few places illustrate the breadth of subjects addres sed by geoscience as the Cascade Volcanoes. Towering along the Cascade Magm atic Arc along the northwest United States coast, the Cascade Volcanoes are a series of quaternary composite cones that attest to the varied history o f this dynamic landscape. That history, a continuation of the volcanism tha t has dominated the region since its commencement in the Eocene, indicates the presence of a myriad of geological hazards in the area. This dynamic en vironment thus provides an unparalleled laboratory for advancing pure and a pplied geoscience. In this presentation, we will investigate how the very n ature of the dynamic Cascade Volcanoes can lead to new heights in the geolo gical sciences.
