Punctuated equilibrium, as drawn from evolutionary paleontology, is a more suitable, guiding principle for interpreting terrestrial tectonics than strict uniformitarianism, because it accounts for what we see from combining the strain effects of sudden, extraterrestrial bombardment and rapid tectonic upheavals with the interspersed, subsequent and uniform stages involving slow tectonic adjustments with gradual plate drift. The consequences of recognizing, far-reaching catastrophic, structural controls from impact tectogenesis on ensuing geological processes is profound and involves many, commonly recognized geological processes.
