 Abstract

The first part of this presentation will present the Status of AEG for the 2020-21 year and my vision as AEG President.

The second part of this presentation will cover the use of blasting for various applications in the mining and construction industries. Overview topics include the types explosive materials, blast safety and risk mitigation, pattern design, drilling and loading and types of blasts. I will then present a case study from Lake Isabella in the southern Sierra Nevada range in California. The project is owned by US Army Corps of Engineers and consists of an earthen Main dam built across the Kern River as well as an Auxiliary dam. The Kern Canyon fault intersects the right abutment of the Auxiliary dam.  Due to seismic safety and seepage concerns the two dams are being raised and buttressed with a zoned downstream shell to mitigate for potential settlements from a design-level earthquake. A large channel is being excavated between the dams for construction of an emergency spillway and labyrinth weir to address a revised PMF. The excavation requires the use of controlled blasting of the granitic bedrock.
