Elevated trace element concentrations in soils, particularly arsenic and vanadium (As/V), have be documented in the glauconitic and clay-silt formations of the Inner Coastal Plain (ICP) of New Jersey by various researchers and by site remediation investigations in the past two decades (2000-2020). Concentrations greatly exceeding the defined baseline concentrations and residential direct contact soil remediation standards (As, 19 ppm (parts per million) and V, 78 ppm) have been detected in soil and sediment samples at multiple locations in the ICP where associated industrial discharges or agricultural arsenical pesticide/fungicide usage are not documented. At many of these sites, As/V concentrations greatly increased with increasing depth below land surface and were potentially associated with the occurrence of glauconitic soils.
