The burning of fossil fuels and cement production have increased global atmospheric CO2 levels by 47%.  CO2, methane, and other anthropogenic greenhouse gases have increased atmospheric absorption of infrared radiation being emitted by the Earth’s surface, causing the atmosphere to warm by 1 degree Centigrade, globally.  This warming has caused changes in climate, severe weather, and the intensity of wildfires.  Some of the connections between global warming and severe weather are obvious, such as the link between global warming and excessive heat events.  Some of the connections are complex and are complicated by natural climate variability, such as the impact of global warming on severe droughts.  There are several possible connections for which there still is no scientific consensus, such as a possible impact of global warming on jet-stream patterns and the sudden strengthening of hurricanes.  Global warming has exacerbated wildfire risk but is only a contributing factor.  This talk will explore these connections and conclude with an overview of why allowing atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions to increase is extremely dangerous.
