“Nevada’s Rapidly Evolving Landscapes: Heir Apparent to the San Andreas Fault” By Dr. James Faulds, Nevada State Geologist

The Nevada State Geologist, Dr. James Faulds, will give a PowerPoint presentation describing major research activities at the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG). NBMG is a research and public service unit of UNR and serves as the state geological survey of Nevada. His talk will focus on the Walker Lane, which is a youthful strike-slip fault system cutting through western Nevada and eastern California. It currently accommodates ~20% of the dextral motion between the Pacific and North American plates and may eventually evolve into the primary plate boundary, usurping the San Andreas Fault. An arm of the Walker Lane extends into the Las Vegas area of southern Nevada. Having this incipient plate boundary in our backyard enhances seismicity in the region but also induces abundant geothermal activity. Thus, Nevada has more renewable geothermal energy resources than any other state.

Joint meeting with Great Basin Chapter. This is the 30th anniversary of the first meeting of the Southern Nevada Chapter and the first meeting of the Great Basin Chapter in October 1990.
