AEG Texas Chapter: Dyeing to Know – The uses of tracers in karst hydrology

Tracers have a long history of use in groundwater studies in karst. Tracers can be used to determine groundwater flowpaths, time-of-travel, and they may be used as surrogate contaminants to determine the fate and transport of a hazardous materials spill. Many different tracing agents have been used in karst and fractured rock but most practitioners have found that fluorescent dyes and brightening agents provide the best results. Fluorescent dyes used for tracer testing are soluble in water, are relatively cheap to purchase and obtain, are non-toxic, easily recovered, and have high detectability (low detection limits). However, there is an art to the use of tracers in karst that comes from experience including the selection and quantity of dye to be used, monitoring duration and methods, and analytical methods.
