State of AEG followed by the GEER 2010 Darfield New Zealand Earthquake Investigation

Speaker: William Godwin, P.G., C.E.G., AEG Vice-President (2019-2020)

At 4:35 am on September 4th NZ Standard Time, the rupture of a previously unrecognized strike-slip fault (Greendale Fault) beneath the Canterbury Plains of New Zealand’s South Island produced a Mw 7.1 earthquake that caused widespread damage throughout the region. Surprisingly only two people were seriously injured, with approximately 100 total injuries.

Following the earthquake, a Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) was conducted by a joint USA-NZ-Japan team, with the main funding for the USA contingent coming from GEER and partial support coming from PEER and EERI. Mr. Godwin was part of the team and he will share his experience as well as other seismic events and research that have followed in the last 10 years.

The session will be available online from 12pm -1pm EDT to the first 500 participants to log in. Time will be available following the presentation for Q&A.
