San Joaquin Chapter Field Trip

Where: San Simeon Area, the coast between San Simeon Hearst State Park and Morro Rock. Meet at the Randolf Hearst memorial View Point
Information: This field trip will look at the iconic Franciscan Melanges of the San Simeon area that were part of a study by Hsü, K. Jinghwa, 1969, Preliminary report and geologic guide to Franciscan melanges of the Morro Bay- San Simeon area, California. Hsü's work forced academic geologists to realize that there are block-in-matrix units in addition to more "conventional" layered units.  From at least 1978 these rocks also generated controversy over the mechanism of mixing of blocks in matrix: sedimentary versus tectonic.
